Performance testing the cloud

Intechnica are holding an event entitled "How fast is the cloud?" at the Porsche Experience Centre on 28th July. The purpose of the event is to present the findings of our project to performance test the cloud, and to provide a forum for discussion amongst peers, independent consultant and providers. We are testing the same application installed on 4 different environments: Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, VMWare (private cloud), and a traditional physical server.
We are inviting a limited number of IT professionals and would be keen to have UK TMF members there. Please contact Phil on 07850 884 803 or phil.horn@intechnica.co.uk to reserve your place or for more information.

Cloud performance test - more info

Here's some more detail on the project we're running. We'll be producing a white paper on it so drop me a note if you'd like a copy.

The approach that we're taking to testing the various cloud providers is to run performance tests using our TrafficSpike load testing application against a common application installed on Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, VMWare (private cloud) and physical servers. We've tried to make our tests comparable by using similar specification servers from each provider (typically quad-core servers with 7-8GB RAM for both the web and database servers).

Details on our TrafficSpike tool are at this URL:
http://intechnica.co.uk/Expertise/Performance-Testing

The application that we're using is a simple two-tier ecommerce application called nopCommerce (chosen because it is a simple "off the shelf" application and is available for each of our target platforms). We've taken the standard implementation of nopCommerce and added large numbers of products to allow us to test the performance of the application with approx. 7500 products and associated images in the application database.

A demonstration site for nopCommerce is at this URL:
http://demo.nopcommerce.com/default.aspx

Each platform will be tested using the same test data and the same number of "virtual users", performing the same business transactions. Users will search and browse the site, add items to their carts and a proportion will go through the purchasing process. Response times per user will be recorded, along with the performance of the underlying infrastructure. This will allow us to demonstrate the relative performance of each platform.

Whilst we expect different performance from each platform we expect to be able to highlight the pros and cons of each platform for different market sectors such as retail, financial etc.

Cloud performance test - report / findings

The report from our "How fast is the cloud?" project can now be downloaded from http://intechnica.co.uk/Events/how-fast-is-the-cloud
Our project returned some rather interesting results for the cloud.
